A Look At Our Coastal Maine Road Trip

Happy Friday, friends! What fun plans do you have for the weekend?!

My parents were the absolute best and came to stay the week with the kids while we were gone. They had so much fun with them and it seemed like they each grew an entire foot while we were away!!

Since we were going to be driving along the coast, we flew into Portland, Maine, and then drove the 4 hours up to Bar Harbor. We had a lovely oceanfront room at the Atlantic Oceanfront Hotel and the most amazing dinner at Side Street Cafe. Their lobster quesadilla was to die for!! 😍

Now I don’t claim to be a morning person in any way, but when you’re staying in the city that is the first to see the sunrise in the continental US, you have to get up and see it. So at 6 am with our boxed breakfast and coffee we hopped into the car to drive to the top of Cadillac Mountain. We allllmost didn’t go because it was downpouring, but the 40-minute wait in the car waiting for the rain to move out was worth it when the skies cleared! We were so high the view was foggy at times (we had a thick fog roll in while we hiking on spot and the mountains completely disappeared from view right in front of us 😂). It was great!!

After hiking the loop trail at the top of Cadillac Mountain, we headed back to the hotel for more coffee and check out. Then it was off to drive Park Loop Road inside Acadia National Park. We did sooooo much hiking that day and even though my thighs hated me by the end, it was worth it!!

We ended the Park Loop Road drive by visiting our first lighthouse, the Bass Head Lighthouse!

After Bass Head, we headed down along the coast to our next stay in Castine. We stayed at the Pentagoet Inn (I read great things about it!) and it was a lovely old home. Castine was truly a small town, it felt even more remote than we already felt being out along the coast.

After breakfast the next morning we visited Wadsworth Cove beach and found some purple seashells for Harper. She loved them and we’re trying to find the perfect spot in her room for them! After that, we had a lovely walk along the waterfront walkway in Bucksport then visited Dyce Head Lighthouse. Next, we headed to Camden for lunch and some shopping. We had a lovely lunch on the waterfront and found the most amazing candy shop.

This day was definitely lighthouse day! We had three on the agenda already, but the lovely owner of the candy shop told us about Marshall Point Lighthouse and that it was featured in Forrest Gump, so we knew we had to go!

Fourth and final lighthouse for the day, Pemaquid Point Lighthouse!

When I say we loved the Smuggler’s Inn Cove, I mean we really loved the Smuggler’s Inn Cove!! I didn’t know it when I booked it, but they’re newly renovated and had their grand opening on May 28th! They’re doing some great things there and you absolutely can’t beat the view. Dora and Daniel, the owners, were so kind to us. Dora even let us order dinner after service was over so we could go watch the sunset from our room. 😭

Boothbay Harbor was so much fun to walk around! They had fun shops and great food. We really lucked out everywhere we went lol!!

I read all about Red’s Eats in Wiscasset and knew they were the place I wanted to go for a lobster roll. We waited two hours in line in the drizzling rain, but the lobster roll easily made up for it!!

The last day and a half of our trip were spent back in Portland. We did a little hiking before having anniversary photos done with Andrea Simmons Photography at Portland Head Light, which turned out amazing!!

Our last full day was spent in downtown Portland for more shopping and good food. We ended the day back at Portland Head Light to climb the rocks some more and listen to the ocean one last time. It was truly a restorative, fun trip!!
