3 Tips for a Perfect Portrait Session

Portraits

August 3, 2020

Let’s face it, not everyone spends the day in front of the camera. Having portraits taken can be nerve-wracking when you don’t know what to expect. Add in kids and it can become quite the challenge! Today I’ve rounded up my three favorite portrait session tips to help you get the most out of your photography experience!

1. Dress to Impress

Have you ever dreamed of rocking a session in a long, flowy gown and a flower crown? Or maybe a cocktail dress and a pair of sparkly heels?? Or for guys, who doesn’t love a sharp-looking pair of suspenders with a bow tie?! Your session is really a time to celebrate the unique, authentic you, so don’t be afraid to dress it up and have fun! After all, you can never be too dressed up for photos!!

2. Pick a Location That Means Something to You

Just because you saw it as you scrolled on Pinterest or Instagram means it’s the perfect spot for you! Make sure to give yourself time to research locations you really want to use for your portraits. Whether it is a field of wildflowers or the bustling streets of downtown life, the place you choose should be a reflection of you! Portraits tell a story and having them done at a meaningful spot provides those details that make it memorable. After all, you’ll want to display and share these images for years to come, it should be in a spot you would enjoy looking back on fondly!

3. Remember to Have Fun!

As I said before, having pictures taken can feel stressful for some! From finding the perfect location to planning an outfit (if not several outfits for hubby and kiddos!), to making sure everyone arrives on time and in one piece…..it’s hard to imagine people really sign up to do this for fun! Even with all those details that can drive even the sanest of people crazy, remember that in the end, your session is about capturing the laughter, love, and joy you feel with those people who mean the most to you. Be silly, play, laugh, smile, and let the stress go! Your photographer is there to lead you through the technical stuff so you can focus on being engaged with your partner and/or family, have fun, and you’ll walk away with fun, genuine portraits!

I believe these three simple tips go a long way to creating a great portrait session experience. A little planning goes a long way to help keep a session stress-free and fun!
