Tips For Engagement Photo Outfits

Help! What am I supposed to wear to my engagement session?!” Out of all the questions I’ve been asked by my Courtney Carney couples, this is at the top of the list! This post is all about giving my current and future couples great tips and inspiration while they prep their engagement photos outfits!!

1. Don’t Be Afraid To Dress It Up

Now is the time to really go all out for your images! So splurge on that long, flowy evening dress you’ve been eyeing, or rock a floral crown! There is no way to be “too dressed up” for your engagement session, so have fun with it! Looking to glam it up, but don’t want to break the bank? Check out Rent the Runway! This online wardrobe rental company is a great way to find styles you’ll feel like a million bucks in at affordable prices.

2. Coordinate – Don’t Match!

When picking out your outfits, make sure that you’re not falling into the trap of needing to perfectly match, instead choose colors that coordinate with each other. We all know it’s impossible to find the same shade of blue between women’s and men’s clothes anyway! Finding outfits that “fit” together will look more cohesive on camera and bring more visual interest to your images.

3. Flatter Your Features

Everyone, yes EVERYONE, has an area on their body that they feel self-conscious about. So taking a moment to recognize those areas is key in making sure they are flattered on camera. Hate the way your arms look? Avoid wearing strapless or spaghetti straps and instead choose outfits with three-quarter length sleeves that have an instant slimming effect on the arms. Taking time to focus on flattering these areas will help ensure you love how you look in your photos!

4. Make Sure Your Styles Match

Make sure you’re equal in how formal your attire is. If the bride shows up in a long, gorgeous evening gown and the groom is in shorts and flip-flops, that disconnect in your styles with be glaringly obvious. Most of my couples bring two outfits to their sessions! One that is a little more formal and another that is more casual and relaxed. Some extra time may need to be planned as far as outfit changes, but two outfits will create a good variety throughout your images!

5. Accessorize

Pairing an accessory or two with your outfits is a great way to add some extra dimension to your images. Belts, scarves, chunky necklaces…I love them all! They add great visual interest and also give you something else to hold onto during posing if you don’t have long hair. Another great option is a bouquet to hold! Or better yet, your adorable dog!! This photographer will work for doggie kisses!!!

6. Be You And Have Fun With It!

At the end of the day, these are your images and should be a true representation of who you are. Not the long, flowy dress type, but you rock a romper like nobody’s business? Wear it! Don’t feel like you have to fit into the mold of what you see on social media or what others are wearing for their sessions. You’re not them! Have fun with it and let your love and unique styles shine through!
