How To Get Your Groom Ready For Photos
Let’s be honest for a second. Most men are not exactly thrilled about stepping in front of the camera for photos. In fact, many of them would rather be doing just about anything else!
Over the years, I have received plenty of emails from brides who are worried about how their groom will feel about photos. The good news is that it really can be a fun experience for both of you! Most of the time, when a groom feels hesitant, it comes down to one simple thing. He doesn’t know what to expect!
One of the biggest things I focus on with my couples is education and guidance while we’re working together. I walk you through everything so you never feel awkward or unsure about what to do. When couples know what to expect, they relax, have fun, and the photos feel natural.
The best way to prepare your groom is simply to sit down and tell him why photos are important to you. Because while photos might not be his favorite activity, YOU are!
Here are a few easy ways to help your groom feel more prepared and confident when it’s time for your session:
1. Show him some of my work
Before your session, spend a little time scrolling through some blog posts or galleries of my past work together. Share with him the photos you love and what draws you to them!
This gives him a great idea of what the experience will be like and how we’ll spend our time during the session. When guys can actually see the type of photos we’re creating, it helps remove a lot of the mystery and nerves.
2. Arrive early!
This one is so important! I always recommend arriving at least 10 minutes early at the location where we plan to start the session. Running late can create unnecessary stress before photos even begin. Chances are, you might be bickering in the car, trying to get there on time, which doesn’t exactly set the mood for relaxed and romantic photos.
Arriving early gives you a few extra minutes to breathe, touch up your hair or outfits, and settle in before we start shooting!
3. Lower your expectations
Ladies, this one is especially for you.
You know your guy better than anyone else. If he is not overly emotional or super lovey-dovey in everyday life, you cannot expect him to suddenly transform into that person during photos. And that is completely okay!
My goal is never to make couples act like someone they are not. Instead, I focus on helping you interact naturally so your photos reflect who you truly are together. I promise we will capture fun, romantic moments that feel authentic to the two of you.
Preparing your groom ahead of time can make a huge difference in how relaxed your session feels. Once he knows what to expect, most guys end up having way more fun than they thought they would!
